Weligama

Weligama is a town situated on the southern coast of Sri Lanka, within the Matara District of the Southern Province. The name “Weligama” translates to “sandy village,” aptly describing the region’s expansive sandy bay. Located approximately 144 kilometers south of Colombo, it rests at an elevation of 9 meters above sea level. Weligama is renowned as the premier beach destination along Sri Lanka’s southern coast, attracting thousands of young travelers annually who seek surf lessons for beginners, as well as vibrant beach bars and clubs. The area boasts a variety of beaches, each offering a unique atmosphere tailored to different types of visitors. As one of Sri Lanka’s many beautiful locales, Weligama stands out as a favored tourist spot for compelling reasons. Its stunning rivers and picturesque landscapes are undeniably enchanting, making it hard to resist. While the main settlement and coastal road may appear somewhat unkempt, the allure of the sandy beach becomes evident once one ventures away from the central area. Additionally, there are several cove beaches located to the west of the town center.
