Tissamaharama, a charming town in Sri Lanka’s southern province, is known for its human-made tank, Tissa Wewa, and its spectacular birdlife. Originally a sanctuary for Sinhalese patriots, Tissa was established in the 3rd century BC by King Devanam Piya Tissa of Anuradhapura and later became a prominent settlement under King Kavantissa. Today, Tissa is a busy city with a main street lined with banks, restaurants, and small cafés. The city is surrounded by paddy fields, with the most remarkable of these being the two beautiful tanks. Tissamaharama’s history dates back to the 3rd century B.C., with early Tamil Brahmi writing and five large lakes. Archaeological excavations reveal early urban periods in the 4th century B.C., Buddhist saddle querns, potsherds, and a hospital.
