The Kumana National Park is distinguished by its vast expanses of wilderness and a rich variety of flora and fauna. Situated on the southeastern coast of Sri Lanka, this park draws nature and wildlife enthusiasts from around the globe. Established in 1938, it was created as a sanctuary to safeguard the local wildlife and to maintain its distinctive ecosystem.
The park’s primary allure lies in its avian population, featuring the rare black-necked stork, which renders it a haven for birdwatchers. Kumana serves as a crucial nesting site, with over 255 of the country’s 400+ bird species recorded within its boundaries, including numerous endemic and migratory species. Noteworthy birds that inhabit Kumana include the Spot-billed Pelican, Lesser Adjutant Stork, White-bellied Sea Eagle, Grey Heron, Egrets, Asian Openbill Stork, Osprey, and Brown-headed Gull. During a safari, visitors may also encounter some of the park’s larger residents, such as elephants and, with a stroke of luck, leopards. A particularly stunning aspect of Kumana is the Kumana Villu, an expansive mangrove swamp of nearly 500 acres, enveloped by lush greenery. This vibrant mangrove ecosystem attracts numerous migratory birds, providing an opportunity to observe some of the most exotic species in their natural environment. Additionally, Kumana features breathtaking landscapes, including mangrove forests, salt marshes, and undulating hills. The park is also home to several endemic mammals, such as the elusive bear, leopard, elephant, European otter, secretive fishing cat, wild boar, and golden jackal, among others. Common reptiles include the Mugger Crocodile, Indian flap-shelled turtle, and Indian black turtle.
Kumana is relatively less frequented and can be accessed from the southeast coast, near Arugam Bay. It presents a unique combination of natural splendor, rich biodiversity, and cultural significance. Its pristine landscapes, diverse wildlife, and opportunities for outdoor activities make it an exceptional destination for nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers.
