The Knuckles Mountain Range, part of the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, extends across the Kandy and Matale districts.
This remarkable area is home to 34 impressive mountains, with elevations ranging from 900 to 2,000 meters, creating a mystical haven teeming with diverse flora and fauna. Among its notable features are the Five Peaks, which resemble a clenched fist; this remote region is regarded by adventurers as one of the premier hiking destinations, though it is certainly not suited for the faint-hearted.
Covering approximately 155 square kilometers, the Knuckles is inhabited by over 1,000 plant species, around 128 bird species (including 17 that are endemic), and 31 mammal species, among others. Common wildlife sightings in the area include sambar deer, barking deer, mouse deer, purple-faced leaf monkeys, mongooses, porcupines, wild buffalo, wild boars, giant squirrels, and the elusive slender loris.
The Knuckles region offers a variety of trails for trekkers and hikers. Some of the prominent hiking routes include the Dothalugala nature trail, the Mini World’s End trail, the Pitawala Pathana trail, the Knuckles Summit trail, the Duwili Ella trail, and the Nitro Cave trail. Whether you are an avid hiker or simply someone who appreciates the beauty of nature, the Knuckles Mountain Range promises to leave a lasting impression.
