Sinharaja Rain Forest

Sinharaja Rain Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the last viable remnant of Sri Lanka’s tropical lowland rainforest, covering 18,900 acres and ranging in altitude from 300m to 1,170m. The forest reserve, a living heritage in Sri Lanka, spans 11,187 hectares and receives 3000-6000 mm of annual rainfall. It is home to almost 50% of Sri Lanka’s endemic wildlife and is a sanctuary for various species of f lora and fauna. The dense forest cover ensures wildlife safety, but visitors may struggle to see larger mammals like Leopards and Elephants.

Sinharaja forest is a rich ecosystem with a high level of biodiversity, including rare species like the Sri Lankan Blue Magpie and Purple-faced Langur. Its lush vegetation, primarily hardwood trees, is home to 147 bird species, mammals, and endemic reptiles. The wet tropical climate, influenced by the southwest monsoon, contributes to its enchanting atmosphere. The forest also has a rich history and serves as a sacred forest for local communities.

The forest, accessible via Kudawa and Deniyaya, offers activities like trekking, bird watching, and nature photography, with a guide for safety and conservation awareness.
